TITULO: On the connections between watermarking and noisy transmission AUTOR: Josep Domingo-Ferrer Universitat Rovira i Virgili Dept. of Computer Engineering and Mathematics ETSE-Autovia de Salou s/n E-43006 Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain e-mail jdomingo@etse.urv.es ABSTRACT: A scheme for distortion-secure watermarking and collusion-secure fingerprinting of digital information was recently presented in which the problem of correct mark reconstruction was reduced to the problem of transmission over a noisy channel. Taking that proposal as starting point, this paper explores the connection between copyright marking and information theory. We show that models used to formalize steganography ({\em e.g.} the prisoners' model) do not exactly fit copyright marking. Also, the connection between channel capacity and the maximal amount of information that can be embedded in a covertext is discussed.
