It is one of the largest and better preserved castles of the Valladolid region and Castilla y León. Placed on the top of a hill in the city of Medina del Campo, the castle suffered important works ordered by the Catholic Kings in the XVth century.

It has been a state prison and several political and military prisoners were jailed in it during the XVIth and XVIIth centuries.

Now completely restored, it is a conference centre of the "Junta de Castilla y León" (the Regional Administration) and provides facilities for courses and workshops, including housing.
