Numerical Schemes for Equations Modeling Fluid Mixtures

Abstract
Many models of fluid mixtures, polymers, and fluids with multiple phases consist of the momentum equation coupled to an equation governing the evolution of elastic components or phase function(s). Examples include the Ericksen-Leslie model of nematic liquid crystals, the Oldroyd-B fluid, and phase field models of two phase fluids. These equations can be derived from Hamiltonian's principle which exposes the subtle balance between inertia, transport, and dissipation effects. This talk will illustrate how this underlying Hamiltonian structure of can be exploited to develop stable numerical schemes. Compactness properties necessary to establish convergence will also be reviewed.
