MS08 - Splitting Methods

Splitting methods constitute an appropriate choice when numerically integrating a differential equation whose vector field can be decomposed into several pieces and each of them is integrable. They are explicit, simple to implement, preserve structural properties of the system and therefore are very useful in geometric numerical integration. Splitting methods are widely used both for ODEs and PDEs, and very powerful algorithms within this class are widely used in fields ranging from celestial mechanics to molecular dynamics. Our purpose is to bring together several experts in the construction and analysis of splitting methods.
