MS20 - Variational Techniques in Structure-Preserving Methods for Partial Differential Equations

For partial differential equations that have a certain structure, numerical schemes that maintain this structure are often advantageous in stability and quality of solutions. A typical structure is the variational structure of the equations of motion (the Hamilton equation and the Euler-Lagrange equation) of mechanics. Thus schemes are often designed by using variational techniques. The aim of this symposium is to present recent progress on these techniques with related topics. The focus is particularly on variational integrators, energy-preserving/dissipating schemes based on the variational structure, symmetry-adapted moving meshes, and other geometric integrations for PDEs.
