Valladolid is the capital of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. It is located near the center of Castilla y León at about 200 km north of Madrid. Its population is around 300.000. Although Valladolid is usually known by its historical role in the Kingdom of Spain, today it has become an important industrial center. Valladolid has a brilliant past. Its origin goes back to the XIth century (1072). In the XIIIth century, the Universidad de Valladolid was founded. The Universities of Valladolid and Salamanca are the oldest existing in Spain today, and are among the earliest of such institutions in Europe.
Valladolid has outstanding museums like the Museum of Sculpture and Columbus House. In addition, our city can boast of having impressive historical buildings whose styles run the gamut from Romanesque to Neoclassic: Santa María la Antigua (Gothic-Romanesque), Santa Cruz Palace (Renaissance), Cathedral (Renaissance), San Pablo Church (late Gothic), Filipinos Church (Neoclassic), etc.
